While Beautycounter isn’t completely natural or organic at this point, they are striving to make their products as safe as they possibly can be. Phenoxyethanol
This preservative is used instead of parabens to lengthen a product’s shelf life. Phenoxyethanol is a way to keep bacteria from growing on or within a product. When you are using something on your skin or face each day, this can be a real concern. There are natural ingredients that can accomplish the same goal. These natural ingredients tend to be more expensive to obtain.

Phenoxyethanol in high doses can cause lung issues as well as skin irritation. The nervous system can even become affected. While testing is typically done in undiluted, higher doses, this isn’t a product that many people should want to risk using. Some brands use Phenoxyethanol because it may be safe when used in a concentration of 2.2%. Beautycounter has used Phenoxyethanol but only at a concentration of below 1%.

Regarding the use of Phenoxyethanol, BeautyCounter has stated:

Their brand uses preservatives, such as phenoxyethanol, to prevent dangerous microbes from contaminating the entire product. This can occur when there is water in a product. Beautycounter ensures that they use only a very small amount of preservatives. The amount is just enough to prevent harmful bacteria from growing. It is not an extremely hazardous amount, like you will find in other brands of cosmetics. There is no scientific evidence that suggests that preservatives at that level would be dangerous.

There are preservatives, like parabens, that are tied to issues of hormone disruption. Phenoxyethanol was studied by a third-party lab that was hired by Beautycounter. Non-animal testing determined that there was no effect on estrogen or androgens at the concentrations that were being used by Beautycounter.

Dimethicone
This is a product that is used for creating a smooth product. You’ll most commonly find it in concealers and foundations. Unfortunately, dimethicone can be a severe skin irritant. It creates a barrier on the skin. If you have trapped existing bacteria under that layer, you aren’t doing your skin any good. It is used in Beautycounter’s products at a concentration of 6% or lower.

Sodium Benzoate
When you combine sodium benzoate with vitamin C, you develop a carcinogen. These two products can sometimes be found in food products. When it comes to beauty products, it is important that these two ingredients are never used at the same time.

This isn’t an unsafe ingredient to use, but knowledge is extremely important. The products that include vitamin C as part of the Beautycounter line do not contain sodium benzoate. You can rest assured that these products are safe to use.

Currently, the United States has banned approximately 30 different ingredients from being used in beauty products. We are way behind. Europe has over 1,400 ingredients that can no longer be used. There is a lack of information when it comes to these different chemicals that we are using.

The cosmetic market has about 80,000 different potential chemicals that can be used. A large majority of these chemicals have not been sufficiently tested before being added to products that people are using every day.
